The Interim Joint Matriculation Board was set up in 1970 under status 5 of the Ahmadu Bello University Law, to run the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination as an alternative to “A” Level Examination, for candidates who may wish to seek for undergraduate admission into Ahmadu Bello University and other universities.
The programme was envisioned as stop-gap or bridge after secondary school education, to prepare candidates academically, mentally and socially for the challenges of university education.
he IJMBE is a qualifying examination concluded annually, mainly for Advanced Level (A/L) subjects for admission into 200 level in Nigerian and foreign Universities. In addition, two Ordinary Level (O/L) subjects (English and Mathematics) are also offered as equivalent to WAS and or NEO O-Level, for candidates who may be deficient in the subjects. Candidates are presented for the IJMB examination through affiliated institutions which are saddled with the responsibility of providing facilities for training candidates for the examination under the control of the IJMBE Governing Board.
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has, from 1978 been the moderating agency to the IJMB Examination.
Advanced Level (A/L) Accounting, Biology, Business Management, Chemistry, Christian Religious Studies, Economics, Geography, Government, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Sociology, Ordinary Level (O/L) English Language and Mathematics.
The IJMB Subject combinations were compiled with the aim of streamlining and making them relevant for specialization in various disciplines acceptable to universities. The approves subject combination were arrived at after due consultations with relevant documents relating to Direct Entry requirements for various programmes of studies in Nigerian Universities as specified in the JAMB brochure.

Social sciences are a group of academic disciplines that examine society and how people interact and develop as a culture. Social science as a field of study is separate from the natural sciences; Economics, political science, history, law, and geography are considered social sciences.
Teaching in IJMBE programme is guided by IJMBE syllabus and the contents of the syllabus cover university 100 level syllabus and above which must be taught for a minimum period of 12 months. strict adherence to the IJMBE calendar of activities is ensured through documentation of candidates registration at the Secretariat immediately after the completion of registration at the institutions. No candidate can be presented for examination before the twelve (12) months duration.
The entire examination process is moderated by JAMB appointed moderators selected from various Nigerian Universities.
The Examination is administered at the affiliated institutions by Supervisors appointed by the IJMB. These Supervisors comprise mainly of senior academics from affiliated institutions and ABU. The examination is graded and the results processed under strict control of Chief Examiners, JAMB Moderators and JAMB Representatives, and the Secretariat.
Each candidate registering for the IJMBE is expected to offer three (3) combinable subjects at the Advance Level relevant for pursuance of a University degree on successful completion of the IJMBE programme, and where the need arises, one of the Ordinary Level subjects.
